1911 - Soverato as seen from the beach
From an old oil mill...
The hamlet that hosts “I giardini del caramante” until the 1990s was basically an agricultural hamlet run by the “Mortara e Cafone” farm. For almost a century, the hamlet contained: a communal oven, a millstone, stables, manures, hayloft, residences, soap house, well and, of course, an oil mill.
The oil mill itself was one of the first buildings in the area built in 1908 and used as an oil mill around 1910: it was a modern oil mill at the time, using an internal combustion engine.
In the 1920s, the mill was converted to electric, becoming one of the first electric mills in Calabria, and then in 1952 expanded to allow second milling and equipped with a grinder and heavy presses for the first pressing of pomace.
The company worked up to 5000 olive trees, processing up to 3500 quintals of olives.
In the 1990s, the company was closed because it was no longer economically viable.
...to a theatre!
In 1995, the oil mill was transformed into a unique theatre: The Theatre of Cricket.
The theatre has been animating a village crystallised in time ever since, cultivating culture and creativity.
The natural proximity of the “Teatro del Grillo” to the Glamping “I Giardini del Caramante” (the entrances are next to each other) and the complementary purposes make them natural partners.
